I would also ask hotel personnel what they recommend. I think one of the best ways to find where the great food hotspots are is to ask the local population. By the end of my trip, I would hope to have learned a great deal about the culture and the customs of the city. Types, causes, and advantages and disadvantages of monopolies Monopoly is the situation in which there is a single seller of a product (i.e., a good or service) for which there are no close substitutes. The word is derived from the Greek words monos (meaning one) and polein (meaning to sell). Governmental policy with regard to monopolies can have major effects not only on specific businesses and industries but also on the economy and society as a whole. Types Oligopoly: Is a situation in which sales of a product are dominated by a small number of a relatively large seller who is able to collectively exert control over its supply and prices. Cartel: Is a type of oligopoly in which a centralized institution exists for the purpose of coordinating the action of several independent suppliers of a product. The best example today is the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Trust: Popular way to form monopolies in USA. This was an arrangement by which stockholders in several companies transferred their shared to a single set of trustees. In exchange, the stockholders received a certificate entitling them to a specified share of the consolidated earning of the jointly managed companies. The trust came to dominate a number of major industries (tobacco, sugar, etc.) Monopsony: Is the opposite of a conventional monopoly in the sense that there is only a single buyer or only one dominant buyer for a product for which there are multiple sellers. Some companies are both monopolies and monopsonies. By being also a monopsonist, a monopoly can increase its profits even further by putting pressure on the companies that supply inputs for its products to reduce their prices. Extreme cases Pure monopoly: One company has complete control over the supply or sales of a product for which there are no good substitutes. Perfect competition: There are many sellers of identical or virtually identical products. Causes of monopoly By developing or acquiring control over a unique product that is difficult or costly for others companies to copy. By having a lower production cost than competitors. By using various legal and illegal tactics (predatory tactics) By controlling a platform and using vendor lock-in. By receiving a government grant of monopoly status, becoming a government-granted monopoly. Advantages Despite their reputation for evil, monopolies can actually generate a net benefit for society under certain circumstances. These are usually situations in which the power and duration of the monopoly are carefully limited. Natural monopolies can be particularly beneficial. This is because of their ability to attain lower costs of production, often far lower, than would be possible with competitive firms producing the same product in the same region. However, it is almost always necessary for such monopolies to be regulated by a relatively uncorrupted government in order for society to obtain the potential benefits. This is because such monopolies by themselves, as is the case with all monopolies, have little incentive to charge prices close to cost and, rather, tend to charge profit-maximizing prices and restrict output. Likewise, there is often little incentive to pay much attention to quality. It has long been recognized that government-granted monopolies can benefit society as a whole by providing financial incentives to inventors, artists, composers, writers, entrepreneurs and others to innovate and produce creative works. In fact, the importance of establishing monopolies of limited duration for this purpose is even mentioned in the U.S. Constitution. Disadvantages Large monopolies have considerable potential to damage both economies and democratic governments and monopolists often go to extreme lengths to disguise or hide such harmful effects. Example The table below illustrates the case of monopoly. Marginal cost is the value of the additional resources needed to produce another unit of output. The marginal benefit to consumers is the price that consumers are willing to pay for each unit. You should recognize this column as a demand curve. The maximization principle tells us that the economically efficient amount to produce is five, the amount that gives consumers the greatest value. To produce the first unit, the firm takes resources that have a value of $5.00 and turns them into something with a value of $7.01. Because this transformation has increased value, producing the first unit is more economically efficient than producing none. By this logic, producing the sixth unit would decrease economic efficiency because the firm would take resources with a value of $5.00 and transform them into something with a value of only $4.51. The monopolist, however, will find it most profitable to produce only three units because it does not see marginal benefit the same way that buyers see it. For the seller, the extra benefit of the second unit is only $6.01. It sells the second unit for $6.51, but to sell the second unit, it had to reduce the price it charged by $.50. Thus, it lost $.50 on the first unit, so the net increase in its revenue was only $6.01. (You can get the same answer by computing a total revenue column and then calculating revenue increases.) In a similar manner, the rest of the fourth column can be obtained. Using the maximization principle, one can see that producing beyond the third unit is not in the interests of the firm. The fourth unit brings in added benefits of only $4.01 to the firm (it sells for $5.51, but to sell it, the firm lowers price by $.50 on three other units), but costs an added $5.00. From the point of view of the buyers, however, the fourth unit should be produced. It brings them added benefits of $5.51 and uses resources worth only $5.00.

The relationship has a significant role that creates most of the actions, reactions, moods, feelings and attitudes in the play. That relationship changes throughout the play, at first there is a lot of respect between them, however in time Lady Macbeth takes the part of the more dominant character of their relationship. During the time between the coronation and the banquet the relationship becomes very distressed. Neither of them are sleeping. Guilt is overcoming the couple. Macbeth begins to plan and think alone and shuts out Lady Macbeth from his thoughts. ââ¬Å"How now my lord! why do you keep aloneâ⬠¦? â⬠(III, ii) By the banquet scene, Lady Macbeth realises she canââ¬â¢t do anything to help her husband. At the end, she and her husband, have grown apart, so they are no in a relationship anymore. He is determined to go back to the witches; we feel that Macbeth is no longer trusting his wife but instead in ââ¬Å"You lack the season of all natures, sleep. (III, iv) After the banquet there is a long period when all Lady Macbeth can do is watch as Macbeth continues killing. By the last Act, a combination of isolation and guilt has driven Lady Macbeth mad. â⬠I tell you yet again, Banquoââ¬â¢s buried, he / Cannot come out onââ¬â¢s grave. ââ¬Ë (V, i) â⬠Shortly before the end, Macbeth too realises that his life no longer has any meaning and calmly faces his own death at the hands of Macduff. Most elder abuse victims are dependent on their abuser for basic needs. 5. At least 1 in 9 Americans over the age of 60 has experienced some form of elder abuse. 6. Seniors who have been abused have a 300 percent higher risk of death when compared to those who werenââ¬â¢t. 7. In almost 90 percent of elder abuse and neglect incidents, the perpetrator is a family member. Two-thirds of perpetrators are adult children or spouses. 8. For every reported incident of elder abuse, five others go unreported. 9. Almost 50 percent of seniors with dementia (a decline in mental ability. Alzheimerââ¬â¢s is the most common type of dementia) experience some form of abuse. 10. While 91 percent of federal abuse prevention dollars are spent on child abuse, 7 percent is spent on domestic abuse, and only 2 percent goes towards protecting the elderly. 11. Legislatures in all 50 states have passed some type of elder abuse law. Types Although there are common themes of elder abuse across nations, there are also unique manifestations based upon history, culture, economic strength, and societal perceptions of older people within nations themselves. The fundamental common denominator is the use of power and control by one individual to affect the well-being and status of another, older, individual. There are several types of abuse of older people that are generally recognized as being elder abuse, including: Physical: e.g. hitting, punching, slapping, burning, pushing, kicking, restraining, falseà imprisonment/confinement, or giving excessive or improper medication Psychological/Emotional: e.g. humiliating a person. A common theme is a perpetrator who identifies something that matters to an older person and then uses it to coerce an older person into a particular action. It may take verbal forms such as name-calling, ridiculing, constantly criticizing, accusations, blaming, or non verbal forms such as ignoring, si lence or shunning. Financial abuse: also known as financial exploitation. e.g. illegal or unauthorized use of a personââ¬â¢s property, money, pension book or other valuables (including changing the personââ¬â¢s will to name the abuser as heir). It may be obtained by deception, coercion, misrepresentation, undue influence, or theft. This includes fraudulently obtaining or use of a power of attorney. Other forms include deprivation of money or other property, or by eviction from own home Scam by strangers: e.g. worthless ââ¬Å"sweepstakesâ⬠that elderly persons must pay in order to collect winnings, fraudulent investment schemes, predatory lending, and lottery scams. Sexual: e.g. forcing a person to take part in any sexual activity without his or her consent, including forcing them to participate in conversations of a sexual nature against their will; may also include situations where person is no longer able to give consent (dementia) Neglect: e.g. depriving a person of food, heat, clothing or comfort or essential medication and depriving a person of needed services to force certain kinds of actions, financial and otherwise. The deprivation may be intentional (active neglect) or happen out of lack of knowledge or resources (passive neglect). Hybrid financial exploitation (HFE): e.g. financial exploitation that co-occurs with physical abuse and/or neglect. HFE victims are more likely to be co-habiting with abusive individual, to have fair/poor health, to fear the abusive individual, to perceive abusive individual as caretaker, and to have a longer duration abuse. In addition, some U.S. state laws also recognize the following as elder abuse: Abandonment: deserting a dependent person with the intent to abandon them or leave them unattended at a place for such a time period as may be likely to endanger their health or welfare. Rights abuse: denying the civil and constitutional rights of a person who is old, but not declared by court to be mentally incapacitated. This is an aspect of elder abuse that is increasingly being recognized and adopted by nations Self-neglect: elderly persons neglecting themselves by not caring aboutà their own health or safety. Self-neglect (harm by self) is treated as conceptually different as abuse (harm by others). Institutional abuse refers to physical or psychological harms, as well as rights violations in settings where care and assistance is provided to dependant older adults or others. It is harder to make hanged, and be different than those around you, but it is entirely possible. Even without direct guidance or proper role models people still know right from wrong and can observe the people around them seeing how to act and how not to act. Following the path Of change and being an individual is not easy but on that path whether you have no parental guidance, or role models, or even if you have the perfect life, it is still your choice to act right or wrongly. If that path is taken correctly and the experiences are looked at with a positive mindset, things are essential to a successful life. The shift in parental roles in Plainsong impacted the children positively due to the positive developments in their characters by portraying commitment, work ethic, intestinal fortitude, and the ability to determine right from wrong. Without the classic family structure, whether it is just Mom, or no parents at all, people often associate that with a set up for failure in the childs future, but this is not the case, and children of non-classic family structures still lead successful lives. The McPherson brothers did not have parents growing up but instead of going on to live a negative life people wouldve expected they run and operate a successful farm. They chose to work hard, and make the best of their situation instead of allowing that lack of guidance to drag them down. Not only do they work hard and run a successful farm but they are very generous and caring individuals. They are very charitable, they gave Eke and Bobby ten dollars for working a day at the farm. When Maggie Jones came to talk to them about Victoria living with them, they were ready to hand over money to help make her life easier. Even without a normal upbringing the McPherson brothers are still hardworking caring, generous people who are productive members to society. Victoria has a mom, but her mother has a lot of problems and does not offer guidance or advice, nor does she present herself as a proper role model for Victoria. When Victoria needed her the most in her life she kicked her out. Even though Victoria din t have a good parental upbringing she I still a committed, hardworking individual. She is faced with extremely hard and difficult problems at a young age and without a proper support system. Even though her situation is hard she still chooses o continue moving forward, working at the diner, going to school and not letting others get to her. She couldve succumbed to the situation and gotten rid of the baby but she stayed committed to her situation and isnt faltering even though it would be the easier thing to do. Even without parents or a normal family structure, the individuals still have the choice to live a positive life even though it may be the harder option people born into a classic family stricture still lead to live lives that arent normal, or what they grew up with. Ms. Stern grew up with a family and experienced a normal life style. Even though she did grow up that way, she now lives all alone, in a gross, cheap, dirty apartment. She is extremely sick and formed very bad habits with smoking. She is very lonely and craves any human interaction that she can get. When Eke and Bobby went to drop off the paper she made them sit down and talk like she always does, trying get enough interaction to hold herself until the next visit. Even without family problems. You can still grow up to make bed choices and end up living a life that is not exactly health or productive. Without that shift in parental roles, she mightnt never developed DOD work ethic, and a sense of responsibility for herself. Eke and Bobby doesnt live in a classic family structure they have to work and are rally left alone to make choices for themselves without parental guidance and so far they still lead a productive life. They are mature for their age and they are gaining good experience by working and communicating with people older than them daily. It teaches them many things about how life works in the future. Eke and Bobby also took it upon themselves to visit there mother and make sure she was okay. They checked on her and took care of her showing hat they are mature and have a sound moral system. The outcome of an individuals life is purely based off the choices the McPherson makes, and how committed they are to bettering or progressing their lives, or choosing not to progress at all. When kids are given more roles and responsibility to fill in their lives at all times whether authority figures are present or not. When Eke and Bobby and there friend went to visit the house where they witnessed the situation with the girl and the two guys having sex, they knew that it was someone elses property and knew not to touch anything. They conducted homeless in a respectful manner and were being very mature about the situation, the kid they brought with them was acting very immature, moving things around and even ended up stealing something from the house. When the old man came in, Eke and Bobby were very apologetic, but the other kid was talking back and being very disrespectful. Every person has a moral code, and knows what is right but some people choose to ignore that and do whatever they want, that is up to the individual, and does not really pertain to the roles or lack of in the family structure. It doesnt matter about how any years in life but the life in those years No matter what situation you are in, you can always choose to make the best of it. Instead of allowing the people and circumstances to drag you down, you can learn from them and see what not to do and by doing that you can make yourself a better person. Instead of digressing or staying stagnant you can progress and become a more productive member of society. People whether they are in the most perfect situation, or the worst possible situation, people are going to turn it into a good thing or a bad thing and that is totally based off what the that pacific individual chooses to do. Children assuming parental roles wont rob them of a childhood but instead facilitate an easier progression through life. They can still do things children do and have those experiences but with the shift in parental roles it adds more responsibility and by doing that adds more maturity. The shift in parental roles in Plainsong impacted the children positively due to the positive developments in their characters by portraying commitment, work ethic, intestinal fortitude, and the ability to determine right from wrong.
